PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION 2008 & THE JOB MARKET (DEMs)Obama-Biden on Jobs Obama-Biden have, as a part of their economic and job creation plan, a significant new investment in America's infrastructure: $25 billion to repair and maintain roads, bridges and schools. This could have a positive impact on the construction trades as they have been hit by slowing housing starts at a time when the country is still feeling the effects of the mortgage crisis. In addition, Obama-Biden propose an Amendment to NAFTA such that it would be made to more fairly serve American workers. Canada and Mexico would be brought in to work closely to help author such an amendment. For skilled workers in danger of losing their jobs due to a rapidly changing economy, Obama-Biden plan to improve upon the existing Trade Adjustment Assistance so that workers could have flexible education options, should the need arise for them to re-train, and also to expand the transition help to service industries. Obama-Biden pledge to end tax breaks for companies that send jobs over seas. Job creation in an Obama-Biden administration would also have a decidedly green aspect. One program includes energy-focused job training for disadvantaged youth. Another would be a federal emphasis on the support and advancement of clean technology innovation. With the goal of supplying twenty-five percent of America's electricity demand via the use of re-newable sources by the year 2025, the energy-to-grid effort itself would likely create hundreds of thousands of new, good paying jobs, including new jobs in rural areas.
